How to Be a Fashion Designer

To be or not to be a fashion designer is a tough choice. Fashion designers are not people you get introduced to all the time. And successful fashion designers are usually too busy or too secretive to share how they got the job. So it can be a dilemma on whether you should take the plunge and invest a small fortune on an unknown future.

No rewarding career in life is ever made to be simple. Fashion design is no exception. Famous designers work extremely hard for their fame and money. But one thing is for sure – if you plan from the start to dedicate yourself, half the battle is won.

Many professionals in the fashion industry will readily agree that fashion students nowadays think that they deserve a paycheck without “paying their dues.” What dues, you ask? Most of them might sound like modern-day slavery. This includes frequent 18-hour work days; weekends spent at work; fetching coffee for the entire department; and being criticized and picked on constantly by co-workers.

Yes, the horror stories you see on reality TV are true. Some of them at least. In a creative industry, anything can happen. So be prepared for it.

Still want to be a fashion designer come hell or rain?

Here are three mantras you should memorize:

1) Your portfolio is your design identity

Just like how celebrity models value their looks and work on maintaining their charm, you have to do the same for your portfolio. Future employers and the public are going to judge you based on your skill to design fabulous pieces. And your portfolio is going to show them exactly what you are capable of.

No matter how hard you work, procrastination can be really hard to beat sometimes. So the best way to get the most versatile fashion design portfolio would be to enroll for a fashion course. Being in school will force you to leave your comfort zones. With the right training and dedication, results are often impressive.

2) Understand why people dress the way they do

The Japanese have their kimonos, the Indians have their saris, and the Chinese have their cheongsams. Even though global fashion is now mainly influenced by top fashion cities like Paris, New York, and London, people around the world still dress differently. A true fashion designer has the EQ to understand what customers want and need.

Are people feeling warm in tropical climates? Do others need to cover up for religious reasons? What kind of jobs do they have? Are your designs simplistic yet stylish enough to be worn every day?

When it comes to fashion psychology, the variables are endless. Yes, you may argue that it is more fun to design for haute couture. But in reality, fashion is more of a business than an art. Even the rich from the highest echelons are still humans. One of the best ways to grow as a fashion designer is to create clothes for everyday people.

The exciting bit about fashion is that it changes every day. So no two days will ever be exactly the same.

3) Find a good fashion school

It can make all the difference in your life. Good schools have the facilities you need. And they also hire lecturers who are well-connected within the industry. Have plans to be an international fashion designer? Consider enrolling into an international school. This allows you to meet many sorts of people from around the world. And it can help you learn a bit more about understanding people like mentioned earlier.

While in school, you will work on assignments necessary to build the best portfolio before you graduate. You will make your own fashion collections, sketch your best designs, and pay homage by studying about the various designs and designers that made fashion history. A fashion design student’s life is nothing short of colorful and exciting.

If you feel that your country may be too conservative for full creative expression, an alternative is to study fashion abroad. Countries like Australia and Singapore are ideal for an English-speaking environment and career opportunities after graduation.

Feeling adventurous? Studying in developing nations can help you save money on craft materials. Not to mention, countries with strong manufacturing industries allow you to build a contact list of reliable suppliers. This will come in handy when you want to start your own label. Living costs in a developing nation is also less costly, so you spend less on your overall education. Countries like China, Thailand, and Sri Lanka can offer you this experience.

5 Career Options for Fashion Design Degree Holders

Society and parents in general tend to be wary towards encouraging people to work in Fashion for good reason. Firstly, they are right about the industry’s highly selective employment. They’re also right when they say that Fashion is “not what it seems” even though they probably have no idea what they really talking about. But before you decide to throw in the towel and take up accounting courses, or look for a no-brainer 9-5 job, here are a few fashion design careers to consider!

The Popular Path

A fashion designer’s job seems to be surrounded by the glitz and glamour of having your works appearing on glossy magazines and the season’s hottest celebrities. It’s a no-brainer that people want to be fashion designers just like how some covet to be millionaires. To take this career path, you need a strong design portfolio. Prior work experience in fashion will be an advantage. So this is where being an intern during your holidays pay off.

There are two kinds of Fashion Designers:

The In-house Designer:

You will work with a fashion company and design clothes according to their guidelines. The company will own the rights to your designs while you draw a monthly salary from them. Depending on the scale of the company, you may work alone or with a team. Be an in-house designer if you have plans to join the big wigs like Fendi, Gucci, Prada or Louis Vuitton.

The Freelancer:

Freelancers work for themselves and sell their designs to fashion houses, directly to shops or to manufacturers. After building a good name, you’ll probably start getting people commissioning you for design work. Freelance Designers have the flexibility of work hours and tend to command higher wages, but keep in mind that financial stability is at high risk. If you’re just starting out, it’s best to work as an in-house designer for some experience first before attempting a freelance career.

Other Possible Paths

Most people don’t study fashion design specifically to join these ranks, but if you found that designing isn’t your cup of tea somewhere through your course; these are jobs in the industry that you can consider:

Fashion Buyer:

You will be responsible for travelling around and buying suitable fashions for shops or departmental stores. Your knowledge in Fashion Design will help you to predict trends or identify quality, giving you an edge for this job.

Fashion Journalist:

You will write articles about fashion and source for newsworthy stories in your field. With in-depth fashion know-how and garment composition, you’ll make a perfect critic and can dish out fantastic fashion advice.

Wedding photography:

You will plan locations and carry out photoshoots with newly weds or bridal studios. By knowing the ins and outs of a fashion shoot, you can make a couple look awesome in their matrimony garb.

If you find yourself jobless long after you’ve graduated with your fashion design degree, all is not lost. It just means that your portfolio needs a revamp. Read up fashion magazines for inspiration and start sketching for a variety of genres. Employers judge designers by their portfolio because it’s the most accurate representation of the owner that no résumé, job experience or testimonial can replace. It portrays your education, experience and personal style. With the right attitude, the possibilities are endless! If the world is not providing you with any shortcuts, the best solution is to make one yourself.

Choice Of Points Of View In The Universe – Limited Only By Your Imagination?

There once wasn’t a God… or was one? For me the question is open.

Then someone invented one… or many… or many people invented many…

And other people invented another one, or another bunch of new ones…

But do we really need any God (invented or real) to realize that things may improve or worsen, and that we are part of the equation?

How much power do we have, really? Is it limited only by our imagination?

As for me, I sometimes play the game that I am a kind of (little) God.

I can feel that something in me likes that.

I then try to figure out what I can or should do.

Shall I try to simply change the way I’m inside, or work on the big picture, at the planet scale?

The time at disposal is limited (my life) but quite long in fact.

The marvelous playing field is right in front of my eyes (the universe)… There is plenty of knowledge I can try to acquire… And there are so many points of view at my disposal…

The many points of view at my disposal… I really think they play an essential role

Try for instance to imagine that there is a God and that in the end, there is a paradise for everyone… I mean, really, for everybody… No Hell at all… Wouldn’t this be extraordinary? Wouldn’t it allow to erase all negative aspects we may see in life and human condition? One second of suffering (our entire life) and then a whole eternity of perfect being?

If it is too difficult to enter my game, too difficult to try to take that for granted, just one moment, just as an experiment, then try to imagine that it is not me, but the person you love the most on the planet that would suggest you to try that.

Imagine your lover telling you “Everything is just perfect as it is, I just know it. I don’t need to believe in God. as they say, I just KNOW. I’m telling you!”. How would you react?

Well, that is precisely what happened to me, and it changed my life in quite a big extent…

Suddenly, and surely because I loved her so much, and she was so much lovable, it was possible to switch from my previous atheist point of view and to experience something where I was immersed in just feeling how good it was to feel in harmony with everything.

This does not mean I am able to stay with this point of view forever. One of my main value is to try to seek the truth everywhere. I was raised as an atheist. So I need to examine other possibilities…

But from then on, I was able to switch between two radically different points of view.

I am sure some will argue that the world is far from perfect, and in the contrary, in fact full of injustice, wars and suffering…

In fact, that was my prime reaction too, when she told me that.

But after that I tried to give her point of view a chance, and I realized it was possible for me to see things differently.

My experience with that leads me to tell you that being able to switch points of view is the path to inner freedom, and that this kind of freedom is a great path to find some kind of great happiness.

You still can examine the opposite point of view… a World with no God, going to its own extinction… and moreover full or suffering that could have been avoided… Yes, this looks so true too…

And then there is life, my life, your life, half of the World, for me, for you… this inner mysterious life no one knows where it comes from, but which we are experiencing every second…

Isn’t that good for me, to have both inner and outer possible improvements to achieve? Isn’t it bringing a sense of a stronger, more interesting engagement, about what can be done, about finding a real meaning of life?

The power we have to do little actions, one after the other is there. And these many points of view can help to find which little actions, taken on our spare time, are the best ones. We can find the path that fits us well for a great balance between acting, feeling, moving, relating to the world in a more and more harmonious manner… There is the point of view, the goal, and the path we shall decide to engage onto.

Do you want to play this game with me? With you?

As for me, I play it with me. But I’m questioning myself, as I find it a very rewarding game, if I should not try to give you some incentive, to do the same, to play it with yourself too… ?

Next step could be to play it together, you and I, sometimes, in a near future, not in parallel, but in a collaborative way, why not?

As I’ve tried to figure out what the big picture could be (dream) and what the present is (reality) there are plenty of actions to be taken to narrow the gap. Please help me… We all need harmony in this world led by profit taking and debt interest paying.

And it looks like we all agree when we think about fighting injustice… Next step might be to accept to hear about the other’s point of view…

A problem is still here though… The law of the least effort… procrastination… but this is another story…

The many points of view at disposal, even if you forget everything I said above… I think these are a good path to try to approach the truth.

For to approach the truth, to be able to see or approach seeing “Things as they are” (rather than seeing them the way it arranges me the most), to do that, it looks relevant to be able to take the opposite point of view and examine it. Some call it critical sense.

How to Overcome Your Negative Self Talks in 3 Steps

Self talks are things we tell ourselves, often in a subconscious way, that we believe to be true. They are not necessary true. In fact, they are often left unexamined, unchallenged and unverified. They are simply assumed to be true. Often, when we have properly examined them, they turn out to be otherwise.

Negative self talks are things we tell ourselves that negatively impact our lives. A common example is “I am not good enough”. Another one is “I am a bad person”. Negative self talks such as these are detrimental to our well being. They are harmful to our self esteem as well as to our physical health.

Everyone has negative self talks. We differ only in the degree or frequency of negative self talks. The good news is that we can change and reduce this unbeneficial mental habit.

1. Learn to be aware of your thoughts

Most people are not very aware of their own thoughts. By this, I do not mean that they do not know their thoughts entirely. We are all aware of our conscious talks. However, there is another layer of talks further below this conscious level that many are not very aware of. Very often, our self talks are found in this deeper level.

The way to become more aware of these self talks is by being more mindful. This would require a purposeful act of paying attention to our thoughts as they arise. In the beginning, this may feel awkward and foreign to our habits. With repeated practice, we can become better at paying attention to our own thoughts.

2. Pick out the negative self talks

Once we are good at noticing our thoughts, we can then pick out those negative self talks that often prevent us from becoming our best. For now, leave the positive self talks alone.

3. Challenge the negative self talks

Very often, negative self talks are found to be untrue when they are properly and honestly examined and challenged. They are often simply excuses we made up so that we can continue to stay “safe” in our comfort zones. Recognize that these are mental barriers that we ourselves have unconsciously erected, and they prevent us from facing up to our fears as well as stop us from overcoming our self-imposed limitations.

To challenge your negative self talks, ask yourself:

1. “Is it true?”
2. Can you be absolutely sure that it is true?
3. How would you feel if it were not true?

The goal is to challenge the truth of your own thoughts. Our natural habit is to resist this, and we can recognize this resistance by noticing the discomfort and anxiety that arise. Allow the anxiety to be. There is no need to act on the anxiety. Simply watch it arising, and with time, it will pass, just as all feelings do.

The more you practice, the easier it becomes to simply watch the resistance arising and passing away. Eventually, the habit of resisting reduces. We become more discerning in our thoughts. We may even be able to consciously replace a negative thought with a positive one.

This is true progress in changing a negative mental habit.

Your Abilities To Concentrate & Focus Can Be Your Tools For Success!

Your abilities to concentrate and focus can be your tools for success! Most people forget about these important abilities when being over whelmed each day.

It is really easy to feel overwhelmed because technology and other distractions have made it almost impossible to really concentrate on one task at a time.

The approach that many people use to deal with their work is to multi-task and while this is an admirable ability it does not do much for solving actual problems or creating new opportunities.

Every day we are bombarded by distractions such as the internet, television, radio and other interruptions when we are trying to work and complete an important assignment.

How much time do you spend each day on the computer searching the social media by using face book, Twitter or checking out the latest antics of the Kardashians and other celebrities? Oh yeah; how much time do you spend on the phone by chatting or texting? All of these events are things that compromise your ability to focus and concentrate when you are trying to be creative!

Perhaps the best example of the power of concentration and focus is sunlight! Sunlight is the one thing that promotes life, however, if you concentrate the power of sunlight by using a magnifying glass it can be destructive and burn things.

Taking the example of light even further with the use of technology it can be concentrated even further and turned into laser beams. It is unimaginable of what can be done with the human brain and the power of concentration.

You have the ability to use the power of concentration and focus your thoughts to create success beyond your wildest dreams!

When you are faced with a major problem or you want to create something you can utilize your brain power to accomplish anything you want. Try incorporating these steps into your creative process.

Avoid distractions! Remove anything that will distract you; this includes your telephone, television and your computer unless you are using it to help your thought process.

Write a short description of what you are trying to resolve or create.

Brain Storm with yourself and itemize all the things that come to mind no matter how absurd they sound. Basically, let your mind loose to do the work it can do to provide a solution. Once you have identified or outlined what you are trying to accomplish let your mind wander.

Do not allow yourself to become frustrated if nothing that happens immediately! Once the seed is planted your mind will continue working on the issue and it will provide a solution sooner or later. Then all of a sudden the solution will come to you when you least expect it!

Learn to work smarter rather than harder!

Your ability to think and concentrate will set you apart from the crowd if you allow it! Learn the art of concentrating and focusing and you will find success and riches you have never thought possible!
